- Symname Installation and use instructions
-
- Purpose of the program:
- For the teacher making up quizzes dealing with practice in
- writing chemical names and formulas can be tedious and time
- consuming. This program allows the teacher to create quizzes
- instantly without using a word processor. Each quiz will be
- randomly generated so it is not very likely that two quizzes will
- be identical. The program is ideal for making makeup quizzes and
- multiple quizzes that are different but test the same knowledge.
- For the student learning how to write chemical names and
- formulas can be difficult. This program provides the student with
- practice in learning the symbols and charges of various ions along
- with writing names and formulas of compounds containing these ions.
-
- Installing Symname on you hard drive:
- To install symname on your hard drive type and enter the word
- install at the dos prompt when you are in the directory where the
- symname files are contained. A directory called c:\symname will
- be created (unless it already exists) and all files will be
- transferred to that directory. As an alternative use the dos copy
- command to copy all files to a directory of your choice.
- To show the symname icon on Program Manager in Windows select
- the program group you want to contain the icon. Select New from
- the File menu of Program Manager. Program item should be chosen.

- existing quiz, to print the ion list, or to exit the program.
-
- New Quiz:
- This menu item will allow the user to create a new quiz. A
- dialog box will be presented which asks for the highest number
- cation and anion to be included on the quiz. The number of
- questions on the quiz will always be the lower of the two numbers
- so that no ion appears more than once. The quiz will then be
- displayed in a window. If you want to print the quiz select Print,
- if not select Don't Print. You will then be asked if you want to
- save the quiz on disk. If you do choose yes, in not choose no.

- This menu allows the user to add, delete, change, or sort
- the ion list. Add does not work in the unregistered version. See
- register.doc for more information.
-
- List Change:
- Choosing this item will present the user with a dialog box
- asking for the cation or anion number to be changed. Enter the
- desired ion number in the box and press enter. An change dialog
- box containing the properties of the ion will appear. Change the
- text as desired and press enter or click on the OK button when
- completed
-
- List Delete:
- Choosing this item will present the user with a dialog box
- asking for the cation or anion number to be deleted.
-
- List Add:
- To add an ion to the list choose this menu option. A dialog
- box will be displayed asking for the properties of the added ion.
- Type in all information and press enter. This menu item will not

- information.
-
- List Sort:
- Choosing this item will alphabetize the ions by name.
-
- Practice Item:
- By clicking on practice the user can practice writing chemical
- formulas and names. After practice is chosen a dialog box will
- appear which will ask which cations and anions are to be included
- in the practice session. Choose the number of the highest cation
- and anion to be included. A window will appear asking either for
- a name or a formula. Type in the response and when completed with
- your answer press the enter key. Errors can be corrected by using
- the backspace key. You will be informed as to whether the answer
- is correct. If the answer is incorrect the correct answer will be
